🚌 Getting There
From Chiayi City: Take the Alishan Forest Railway (3.5 hrs, highly recommended) or Bus 7322 from Chiayi HSR station (2 hrs). From Taipei: High-speed rail to Chiayi (~90 min), then onward transport. Driving is possible but the mountain road is steep — experienced drivers only.
🧣 What to Pack
Even in summer, mountain temperatures drop to 12–18°C. Always bring: a warm fleece or down layer, rain jacket (mist is constant), sturdy walking shoes with grip, headlamp for the 4AM sunrise train, and cash — smaller vendors and farms rarely accept cards.
🎋 Indigenous Culture — The Tsou People
Alishan is the ancestral homeland of the Tsou, one of Taiwan's 16 indigenous nations. Visit the tribal villages of Tefuye and Dabang, attend cultural performances in Zhongzheng Village, and seek out Tsou-run guesthouses and restaurants. Tourism dollars that go directly to indigenous-owned businesses make a real difference to community preservation.
📋 Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book the sunrise train in advance? +
Yes — strongly recommended. The Zhushan sunrise train sells out weeks in advance during peak season (March, October–November). Tickets are available on the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) website or at Chiayi station.
Is Alishan accessible for people with limited mobility? +
The main Shenmu Trail is a fully paved, flat boardwalk accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. The forest railway is also wheelchair accessible with advance notice. The Zhushan sunrise viewpoint platform is paved and accessible.
What language is spoken at Alishan? +
Mandarin is the primary language. Many signs and trail markers are bilingual (Mandarin and English). Staff at major hotels and the park entrance typically speak some English. In smaller businesses, a translation app is very useful.
What is the park entrance fee? +
The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area charges NT$300 for adults and NT$150 for children (under 12) and seniors. The fee covers access to all trails and viewpoints within the park. Forest railway tickets are purchased separately through TRA.
Is there accommodation inside the park? +
Yes — Alishan House (the historic Japanese-era hotel), several guesthouses, and the official campground are all inside or adjacent to the recreation area. These book out months ahead in peak season. More options exist in Alishan Village, a short walk from the main gate.
