🗺️ Visitor Guide

About Alishan

Everything you need to plan a journey into one of Asia's most sacred mountain landscapes.

2,216metres high
1,400km² forest
1906railway built
🚌 Getting There
From Chiayi City: Take the Alishan Forest Railway (3.5 hrs, highly recommended) or Bus 7322 from Chiayi HSR station (2 hrs). From Taipei: High-speed rail to Chiayi (~90 min), then onward transport. Driving is possible but the mountain road is steep — experienced drivers only.
🧣 What to Pack
Even in summer, mountain temperatures drop to 12–18°C. Always bring: a warm fleece or down layer, rain jacket (mist is constant), sturdy walking shoes with grip, headlamp for the 4AM sunrise train, and cash — smaller vendors and farms rarely accept cards.
🎋 Indigenous Culture — The Tsou People
Alishan is the ancestral homeland of the Tsou, one of Taiwan's 16 indigenous nations. Visit the tribal villages of Tefuye and Dabang, attend cultural performances in Zhongzheng Village, and seek out Tsou-run guesthouses and restaurants. Tourism dollars that go directly to indigenous-owned businesses make a real difference to community preservation.
📋 Frequently Asked Questions
